BMW [barely] Refreshes 3-Series

Ever go to get a haircut, ask for just a trim, and the cutter truly just barely cuts your hair? That's what happened on the 3-Series refresh. The front fascia is slightly revised. But for the most part, we're looking at the same ol' 3-Series we know and mostly love. Or strongly like. The biggest changes for the American version are: (1) a 335i wagon will now be available; (2) BMW is rolling out their dual clutch automatic transmission from the M3 as an option on the 335i coupe and convertible models only (guess on a $2500 price premium over the stick) and (3) the 335d, as in turbodiesel, is coming to America. From that oil burning engine you can pay 5.19 for diesel fuel, but also enjoy 425 lb ft of torque starting at only 1750 rpm and 265 horses. For now, the 335d will be only available configured as a RWD sedan for us North Americans, but the engine is set to land in the AWD BMW X5 as well. To be 50-state compliant, the engine uses the AdBlue urea injection system co-developed with Mercedes and VW. Expect the updated cars to be '09 models shipping early fall.

2009 Acura TL Fully Revealed

Thanks to the folks over at Edmunds Inside Line , the embargo is broken and pics are out of the 2009 Acura TL. It's a 28th century wedge of cheese. Acura is really taking their cyborg design theme to the extremes (they call it Keen Edge Dynamic), and while I don't like the general styling, it may look better here on the new TL than it does on the recently debuted Acura TSX. The TL's grill is all ready to plow your snow. That should be a fairly easy job thanks to the optional AWD, included on the higher priced 3.7 liter V6 models. The base 3.5 liter V6 puts out 280 horses through the front wheels only. Both engines route power through a 5-speed automatic: no word if a stick will be available, sorry to friend that like using the left foot. Like in the TSX, the interior on the TL is another Acura buttonfest - an ironic and sad development from the Honda folks that used to build ergonomically pleasant cabins. Since brands without an identity are now trying to sell themselves as the high tech gadget companies (Acura, Lincoln, Ford, Tesla, Nissan), the TL will be loaded up with bluetooth this and alphabet-soup that. Another one bites the dust? How will it stack up against arch rivals like the fellow front wheel drive, automatic only Nissan Maxima? We'll wait to drive it of course, but the TL is off to an ugly start.

What about diesel hybrids?

Some form of hybrid electric drive looks like the wave of the future, or at least the near-term future, and a diesel-electric hybrid would seem to be the best of both worlds. That"s because the electric portion of a hybrid powertrain offers its primary benefit in stop-and-go low-speed city driving, while diesels are at their best cruising steadily along at highway speeds. Why not marry them? The short answer is cost. Two-mode hybrid vehicles have two powertrains, one internal combustion and one electric. The electric portion is the expensive one, largely because of the cost of the big, powerful, exotic battery it must use. Add to that a diesel, which is far costlier than a gasoline engine, and you have two high-cost powertrains on one chassis. (Learn how hybrids work.) Even in Europe, where diesel cars comprise about half the new-car sales, economies of scale have not brought diesel prices in parity with gasoline engines. Because a diesel must cope with significantly greater operating pressures than gasoline engines, the engine itself has to be much beefier. On paper, and maybe on the road some day, a diesel electric hybrid could be the best of both worlds. As was said during our Future of the Car day panel discussion: SCombining the technologies can lead to great efficiencies in power and emissions, however there is cost and question if market will bear it. This month, Emirates Airline will operate 47 extra flights from Dubai to Jeddah, in a move aimed at facilitating travel for the millions of pilgrims visiting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the Holy month of Ramadan. These additional services, starting from today until 15th October, can be accessed by travellers holding a valid Umrah visa. Those wishing to travel to the kingdom for reasons others than Umrah can fly on any of Emirates' regular, scheduled flights that operate 17 times a week from Dubai to Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. These extra flights will depart Dubai at 0900hrs and 1245hrs local time, providing Umrah passengers with more flexibility, and ensuring convenient connections for pilgrims arriving from around Emirates' global network, especially from the Indian sub-continent, and the Far East. Next Gen Prius Gets Solar-Powered A/C

Word has leaked out that the next-generation Toyota Prius will offer optional solar cells on the roof manufactured by Kyocera. Yahoo! News reckons the new system, rated at least 2kW, should be capable of powering the air conditioner unit. The current Prius and other Toyota hybrids already have an electric AC unit. "Adding solar panels to a model targeting mass consumers would mark a first for a major automaker", The Nikkei said. Ahem. Let's flashback to fall 1991, courtesy of the New York Times archive. The last generation Mazda 929 had 500W solar panels on the sunroof. The cells ran exhaust fans in conjunction with the AC unit (the Mazda's chiller wasn't electrically powered). The rooftop solar system could trickle-charge the battery from dead to full steam ahead in one week-- assuming the 929 was parked in Arizona during the dry season. The old system was perfect for the airport long-term parking lot. It'll be a lot harder for the Prius to make this work on a daily basis, but the PR benefit for both the ToMoCo hybrid-- and solar technology in general-- is literally priceless. Even before it turns a wheel, the next gen Prius has trumped Chevy's plug-in electric - gas hybrid Volt.

South Africa's largest gold producer Gold Fields announced Monday it was shedding nearly 2,000 jobs at one of its sites as it shifts to more mechanised mining methods."The company initiated a voluntary retrenchment (redundancy) package because mining in our depleted mines was becoming difficult," Gold Fields spokesman Daniel Thole said."Our aim is to trim operating cost and increase productivity."A total of 1,885 workers will be let go at the South Deep mine south of Johannesburg, he said.The company said the move results from the mine's shift from labour intensive mining to mechanised methods and will cost the company 70 million rand (9.6 million dollars, six million euros).Thole rejected union claims that workers opted for redundancy rather than accept offers from the company to be transferred to what they considered dangerous mines."We have ceased operations in two of our depleted mines, Driefontein and Kloof. That dismisses claims by the union that we were transferring workers to Kloof," said Sole.The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said Gold Fields had offered to move workers from South Deep to Kloof and another mine called Beatrix."Workers chose to go home rather than risk their lives," said NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka.Besides South Africa, Gold Fields has mines in Ghana and Australia and is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange and the Dubai International Financial Exchange. US consumer spending and incomes cooled in June after getting a boost a month earlier from a vast emergency economic stimulus, a government survey showed Monday.The Commerce Department reported that consumer spending rose 0.6 percent in June while incomes rose a mild 0.1 percent, marking the weakest rise in incomes since April 2007.Both readings were nonetheless stronger than expected as most economists had forecast that spending increased 0.5 percent and incomes contracted 0.1 percent.Spending had accelerated at a 0.8-percent clip in May while incomes rose a revised 1.8 percent. Both measures received a shot in the arm from the government's 168-billion-dollar economic stimulus, which was stuffed with one-off tax rebates.The administration of President George W. Bush approved the stimulus to fire up US economic growth which has slowed amid a continuing housing slump, a credit crunch and surging fuel prices.The monthly snapshot is followed closely by the financial markets because consumer spending is the main driver of US economic activity.Although world oil prices have declined slightly in recent weaks from record peaks over 147 dollars a barrel, the report showed a surge in its inflation readings.The PCE (personal consumption expenditures) price index rose 0.8 percent in June -- marking its strongest monthly gain since 1997 -- following a gain of 0.5 percent in the prior month.The core PCE rate, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, increased 0.3 percent, marking its biggest increase since September of last year.

The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry is calling for reforms to speed up the resolution of commercial contract disputes.A recent report from the World Bank Group has found that Dubai ranks 144th in a study of 178 economies worldwide for the resolution of business disputes over commercial contracts.From the study, Dubai Chamber compared the performance of the emirate to that of Singapore, and found that Dubai’s court actions on contract enforcement took around five times as long to reach resolution and cost one and a half times more. “These indicators of enforcing a commercial contract point to the fact there is a real need for reforming and speeding up the process of settling business disputes through the judicial system in Dubai,” the chamber said.The proposed reforms, which have yet to be decided, aim to reduce the time taken from 607 to 200 days and reduce the costs by 31 per cent.Chris Mills, a partner at Clyde and Co international law firm who has practised in Dubai, the UK and Hong Kong, told 7DAYS that it was “not unusual” for a case to take two years from start to finish in any country.However, the difference with Dubai courts was a lack of early settlement options.“It’s very rare here, once a court case has started, to not reach judgment, whereas in other regions, conclusions often come before the judgment,” he said.Mills also pointed to the fact that a winning party in a Dubai case does not recover full legal fees from the opposing party, giving a weak party no financial incentive to settle.

Not Very Exciting Honda Pilot Hits the Net

Until today, we were dependent on "spy shots" to clock the new Honda Pilot. Taken by apparently very bored spy photographers lying in wait in parking lots for a glorified Accord-on-stilts (I guess the Camaro was not out testing that day), it seemed to be 10 percent less ugly than Honda's concept Pilot. As of today, the review embargo has expired. Pilot reviews are springing up like... are Eliot Spitzer jokes out of style yet? Honda appears to have forgotten to invite TTAC to the Pilot's launch, but other more "traditional" folks joined the junket. Edmunds says driving the Pilot is not "particularly memorable," but that the car/truck/minivan does its job. Los Jalopniks report that the refreshed Honda SUV is "not very exciting" but still the sensible car they ought to buy (life is too short for sensible, my friends). Car and Driver calls the Pilot "brilliantly packaged." I call it sorta weird looking, though given the current Pilot's core competencies, I'm confident that most folks will find this two-boxer more than merely adequate. Yes, "it" is the new BMW 1-Series. Like many of James Healey's reviews, there's a huge disconnect between the headline ("BMW 1 Series is small but sassy"), the critic's observations and his conclusions. Combining the old "I'll ask myself a question and then answer it" format with the bi-polar "I'll raise an objection and answer it" routine, Healey plays it straight down the middle. After arguing with himself about the small Bimmer's large price tag, he concludes "Nothing unexpected for a BMW. Hey, here's one: the stupid trim pieces on the inside door handles of the test cars, a 128i convertible and 135i coupe. The pieces are mated so that you grab the joining line every time you use the door handle. Unattractive. Rough-feeling. So there." Nuh. Healey's three word summary: it's a keeper. While our Justin Berkowitz wouldn't agree, BMW might well describe TTAC's 1-Series review the same way Healey refers to the 1-Series convertible's roof rattles: faint but troubling squeaks.

Saleen Inc. hits the quarter century mark next year, and they're already celebrating. At the Dallas Auto Show today they unveiled the "Sterling" edition of their S302 Extreme. The Sterling edition is limited to a production run of 25 vehicles and will be mechanically identical to the "standard" S302 Extreme -- if "standard" can be used to describe a Mustang with a supercharged 5.0L engine pumping out 620hp and 600 lb-ft of torque with accompanying upgrades of everything. The Sterling adds a special silver paint, unique wheels and an upgraded interior featuring "couture" leather. Each of the 25 purchasers will be flown to Detroit where' they'll receive the royal treatment and receive a photo book showing every step involved in "birthing" their baby. It can be yours for just $20k over the price of the plebeian S302 Extreme-- a mere $101,545. Now, if all our readers would just send me one dollar each...

Midsized sedan crash tests - front, side looking good

In the latest crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), all seven midsized sedans provide good frontal crash protection and six provide good side-impact protection. However, results for the rear tests were mixed, with only the Kia Optima earning a good rating. With its latest report, the Institute notes that there has been a marked improvement in side-crash performance for midsized sedans, but it appears more can be done to protect passengers from possible whiplash injuries from rear-end collisions. As we wrote in "Many cars don't protect against whiplash injuries": "A rear-end crash occurs every 17 seconds in the U.S. But a surprising number of vehicles offer inadequate protection from the whiplash injuries that can result, according to crash-test data and our own analysis." This is again proven true with the latest test results from the IIHS, in which five of the seven vehicles tested earned marginal or poor ratings for rear-crash protection. Because rear crashes are rarely fatal, and the IIHS rear tests relatively new, Consumer Reports does not currently use them as a prerequisite for recommending a vehicle. The good news with this test group is that vehicles are indeed improving, with better designs and increased safety equipment enabling them to more effectively protect occupants in the high-risk front and side collisions. As always, do check safety ratings before making a vehicle purchase.
